A message from our little kids to our big kids....

This past week, our fifth grade students kicked off state testing with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) Assessment. This coming week, students in Grades 3, 4, and 5 will begin the ELA Smarter Balanced Assessment.

Our younger students look up to our older learners and have been cheering them on—they are proud of their hard work and effort!

Above is a quick video you can share with your child as a reminder to always do their best and keep getting 1% better each day.

We appreciate your support in helping students feel confident and prepared. Please ensure your child is well-rested, arrives on time, and is ready to do their best each day.

Upcoming State Assessment Dates:
  • April 28–29: ELA SBA (Grades 3–5)
  • May 12–13 & May 19: Math SBA (Grades 3–5)

Thank you for your continued partnership in supporting our students!

Stepney Celebrates the HEART of our Building

On Wednesday, we celebrated the amazing women in our main office!
Staff and students showed appreciation for their kindness, organization, and dedication. They truly are the heart of Stepney, helping our school run smoothly every day.

In honor of Administrative Professionals Day, here are a few fun facts:

Mrs. D’Angelo has been Stepney’s building secretary for nearly 24 years. A Monroe native and former Monroe Elementary student, her own children attended Stepney—and shared teachers with her!

Mrs. Cleri has served as principal’s secretary for 18 years. Her son is a Stepney alum, and she loves spending time with her dog, Loretta. Mrs. Cleri will be retiring this year! We will miss her.

Mrs. Guzzetta, our student support services secretary, joined Stepney five years ago after working at Jockey Hollow. She lives in Trumbull with her family and enjoys vacationing in Hilton Head, SC and visiting her daughter at Penn State!

Thank you, ladies—we’re so grateful for you!

Monroe Kids Vote - May 5, 2026

Voting will take place at the referendum pole.

Three diverse children participate in the 'Monroe Kids Vote' event, with a ballot box and American flags.
Dear Families,
This spring, our elementary students will participate in a special Kids Vote initiative connected to the 250th celebration of American democracy.
What Students Will Do
  • Learn about three local charities:
  • Monroe Food Pantry
  • Project WARMTH
  • Monroe Volunteer EMS
  • Participate in a school-wide Spirit Day fundraiser
  • Vote on how the funds will be donated
Important Dates
  • April 24th: Star-Spangled 250th Spirit Day
  • Students may donate $1 or more to participate and wear red, white, and blue to celebrate America’s 250th birthday!
  • May 5th: Kids Vote Day!
  • Families are invited to bring their children to the Monroe Community Center (formerly St. Jude’s school) during special voting hours (7am-9am and 3pm-8pm) on our town referendum day
  • Students will vote for their chosen charity at special school-specific voting booths
  • No donations can be collected at the voting site
Why This Matters
This experience helps students:
  • Understand the importance of voting
  • See how their voice can make a difference
  • Participate in supporting our local community
All funds collected will be shared among the three charities, with students deciding how the funds are allocated. (1st place will receive 50%, 2nd will receive 30%, and 3rd will receive 20%)
We hope you’ll join us in making this a meaningful and memorable civic experience for our students.

Different Minds, One Community Week

April 27, 2026 – May 1, 2026

As we close Autism Acceptance Month, the Stepney community will participate in Different Minds, One Community Week (April 27–May 1).

Throughout the week, we will focus on understanding and celebrating neurodiversity—the idea that all brains work in unique and valuable ways.

A weekly overview chart detailing themes and focuses for each day from Monday to Friday.
Each day will highlight an important theme, including understanding brain differences, celebrating strengths and interests, building empathy around sensory needs, respecting different ways of communicating, and fostering a strong sense of belonging and inclusion.

Our goal is to continue building a school community where every child feels seen, valued, and supported—living out our commitment to “Be You, Be Kind…Each Child, Every Day.”
