A Warm Welcome to Social Studies Learning

Welcome to K-5 Social Studies. Across the elementary years, children are introduced to meaningful social studies experiences that help them better understand themselves, other people, and the world around them.

Our program follows a spiral approach that builds from year to year: students begin by learning about self and school, then move into town, state, region, and finally Early American History. This sequence is aligned to the Connecticut State Standards and helps children steadily deepen their understanding while revisiting big ideas in developmentally appropriate ways.

Instruction is designed to be engaging, hands-on, and relevant. Through discussion, inquiry, reading, writing, maps, primary sources, and problem-based learning, students practice Historical Thinking Skills while also building collaboration, communication, and curiosity. Along the way, they grow as Little Geographers, Little Historians, Little Citizens, and Little Economists.

In our classrooms, we work to create learning environments where students feel safe, supported, and inspired to ask questions. As they explore communities, places, and the past, children develop citizenship, geographic thinking, and historical understanding in ways that help them make thoughtful connections to their daily lives.

Families are important partners in this work. I encourage you to explore school and district website links and family engagement opportunities that support classroom learning at home. These resources can help you talk about history, geography, communities, and civic life in ways that are accessible and meaningful for children.

Our goal is for all K-5 students to know social studies, use social studies, and enjoy social studies as they grow into informed, caring, and active members of their communities.
